We test, repair and retrofit the switchgear your plant runs on.

BIC Switchgear Services started as a small family operation in 1997. Today we commission new gear, find faults in old gear, and rebuild breakers and relays so they trip when they are supposed to. If something is down right now, call. Emergency response is available around the clock.

Time-current curve of a circuit breaker Higher fault current should trip the breaker faster. A tolerance band surrounds the published curve. One measured point falls far outside the band, meaning the breaker trips too slowly.

What testing finds

Most switchgear problems stay quiet until they cause an outage. These are the usual ones.

  • Connections that run hot

A loose cable or bus connection heats up under load. A thermographic survey shows it as a hot spot long before it turns into an outage.

  • Breakers that trip late, or not at all

A breaker that has sat closed for years can stick or trip slowly. Pushing real current through it shows what it will actually do.

  • Relays that have drifted

Protective relays wander out of calibration, or stop matching the system after it has been changed. We check them against the settings you are supposed to have.

  • Ground fault schemes that fail on the second source

Protection that works on utility power can misbehave when a generator or tie breaker changes how the system is grounded. We test the whole scheme.

How a job goes

You call or writeTell us what the equipment is, what it is doing, and when we can get access. If it is an emergency, call and say so.

We look at the gearA technician reviews the equipment, drawings and test history, so the scope matches what is actually installed.

Testing, on your outage windowWe schedule around production wherever we can. Then we test, calibrate, repair or retrofit, and keep the outage as short as the job allows.

You get the results in writingReadings, findings, and a clear recommendation on what to fix now and what can wait.

Family business, switchgear only

We opened in 1997 and have spent the time since working on switchgear: testing it, repairing it, modifying it, and getting it back on line. Our technicians are certified, licensed and insured, and the work runs under strict safety procedures.
